La Consigna de Anahuac

The Resonance of Equilibrium

HUITZILOPOCHTLI stands on the third, the highest level of the TEOCALLI (la piramide) and surveys the quadrant of the cosmos that is home to humanity.  Under his feet a mighty force that originates from a great fire within the heart of Tonantzin, anchors him, embraces him with a power that is beyond time.  It is what the religions of the world call love and the scientists call gravity.

From this foundation arises TEZCATLIPOCA, constructing himself in four aspects – the first level of the Teocalli.

Besides recalling the four previous suns or cultural epochs of the Nahuatl civilization, these four attributes reflect the facets of human perception in terms of the sum of relationships.  Arising from the awareness of our earthbound context, the human personality is molded as a result of the interaction of duality, and the tension between two absolutes.

  • The duality is that of the self and others, the individual and human society, the feminine and masculine, the family and the generations – both past and future.

  • The first absolute that of the creation itself, with the human being an integral conscious participant and which although she remains a mystery, the universe is not a secret.

  • The other absolute is that of the unknown, all that lies beyond the realm of human understanding or perception.  Embedded in the precept of Ometeotl, the these relationships as regarded holistically as complementary and not oppositional, with interwoven values of  nahui ollin: symmetry and diversity, science and mystery.

QUETZALCOATL appears arriving from the East, the direction of light and life, radiant with the energy of creation.  Quetzalcoatl is charged with the task of ordering with the intelligence that is humankind’s exceptional characteristic the apparent chaos.  His instrument is the Wind with which he clears a path for the arrival of TLALOCTEKUTLI who brings the rain of time, activating the seed planted by Quetzalcoatl.  The seed is the principle of harmony, the resonance of equilibrium as the MEXICAYOTL Way of Life that reverberates echoing the solar wind itself to create a reality allowing for the development of the full human potential.  The second level of the teocalli is constructed and the ceremony is born.

Huitzilopochtli looks to the West.  It is in that direction that he senses his spirit will depart from this world.  As he gazes towards the heavens, in spite of the powerful attraction of Tonantzin, a sense of nostalgia and profound longing spark him into his characteristic personality mode – action.

The bow of Dream Memory is drawn, his thoughts as arrows he lets fly seeking the Quetzalmazatl: the hunt is for knowledge and wisdom.   He moves to the drum of a great heart beat, the Nahui Ollin. He sings, he dances, and then finally, he flies.

The Earth

Heinmot Tookyalaket (Chief Joseph) of the Nez Perces
The Earth was created by the assistance of the sun, and it should be left as it was...

The country was made without lines of demarcation, and it was no man's business to divide it...

The earth and myself are of one mind. The measure of the land and the measure of our bodies are the same.
Say to us if you can say it, that you were sent by the Creative Power to talk to us. Perhaps you think the Creator sent you here to dispose of us as you see fit.

If I thought you were sent by the Creator I might be induced to think you had a right to dispose of me.

Do not misunderstand me, but understand me fully with reference to my affection for the land.

I never said the land was mine to do with as I chose. The one who has the right to dispose of it is the one who created it.
NAHUACALLI

I claim a right to live on my land, and accord you the privilege to live on yours.

COATEQUIYOTL: The Community Tequiyotl

COATEQUIYOTL
The Community Tequiyotl

It is one expression of the reciprocal relationship of the Cenyeliztli (family) with their community i.e. the Calpolli.

TEQUIYOTL:  work, labor, payment of labor, contribution.
COATL:  1. snake, serpent, culebra, serpiente
                     2. twin, cuates, gemelo
                     3. duplicity, reciprocity, complementarity

In the expression COATEQUIYOTL, the COA carries the sense of two entities sharing a single complimentary relationship.

OmeCoatl

For example, NOTZA means "to call or summon someone", but COANOTZA means "to invite someone" i.e. to enter into a Host-and-Guest relationship. A person cannot be a host without a guest, and vica versa.

COATEQUIYOTL carries the sense of TEQUIYOTL that is performed in a mutual beneficial Give-and-Take relationship within the community.

Traditionally the Coatequiyotl consisted of communal projects that were done for the benefit of the Calpolli, such as planting and harvesting of crops, road maintenance, irrigation projects, building and maintaining Calpolli structures, and similar efforts. On a larger scale the Altepetl (agropolis) would require that each Calpolli to contribute to larger projects that for the benefit of the many Calpolli in the Altepetl.

The Xicano Paradigm

E’ECATL
The Xicano Paradigm

Some twenty years after having participated in the birthing stages of the Chicano student movement of the 60’s and 70’s, some of the original MEChA activists gathered at the occasion of the California State Wide MEChA conference in 1994 held in Bakersfield.  MEChA - Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan.  The veteranos and veteranas had come together in a sort of elders council to share and evaluate the history of the movement which they had helped to build in their younger days.  Looking back, sitting in a circle with sacred eagle feathers, tobacco and copal, the perspectives of each were expressed.  In the background, the younger generation of college Mechistas were involved in the conference workshops.

Nearly all of them were professionals. Lawyers, administrators, community leaders, teachers, etc.  All representing an unspoken but understood testimony to the sacrifices and efforts of the Movement to open up the educational opportunities for our peoples, fruit of a generation of struggle.

Some of the words were hard.  Betrayal.  Betrayal of the movement.  Was not one of the objectives of the movement to develop the intellectual defense of La Raza?  How had it come to pass that the professional class had found it so easy to return to the assimilationist Hispanic syndrome being promoted by Washington?

It was not a new discussion. When El Veterano spoke now what he said came after many previous platicas con la gente had brought clarity to the question.

What it was, was the paradigm.  We as a people had been struggling to achieve access to education: higher education at the college and university levels.  The paradigm that was put before us, which many of us bought into, was that:

EDUCATION would open up ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES which would lead to SUCCESS which would then translate to POWER.

What is education? Community based economics or individual windfalls? Who defines success?  Can one own the power of the sun, the land, the wind, or the waters of the earth?

Perhaps, he said, it would be better if we determined our own paradigm instead of blindly following one which has been imposed upon us.  One which is really only working for a very few of us.  Perhaps we might even adopt the principles which our ancestors used to guide the development of our culture and civilization for thousands of years.  Education is not just book learning, especially not from books which do not reflect our Peoples’ perspective and contribution to humanity.  Let us, he said, consider pursuing:

KNOWLEDGE which can lead to
   WISDOM, which will develop
       STRENGTH, that we may achieve
HARMONY within and without.
